A flash of golden light on flaxen hair,
And I expect to see your shining face;
I glance toward it, hope to see you there,
But someone else is standing in your place.
Threads of gold winding, binding together;
Life's burdens are heavy, death light as a feather,
But I'll keep going—the threads are my tether;
Threads of gold bind us forever together.
These golden tones I recognize as yours
With sylphic wings alight upon my ear—
But when I trace the words back to their source,
I realize it's not your voice I hear.

You sidle up beside me and caress
My skin—a golden touch I want to share;
Intending to return the tenderness,
I reach toward you, touching only air.

I wrote this years ago. I'd intended it to be a lyric poem with a refrain, but a friend of mine said it was a song, so...I guess it's a song.
